Spend winter term creating photographs in the style of famous women photographers, from both the past and present. Before women had the right to vote, in the U.S., Francis Benjamin Johnston, one of the founders of photojournalism, photographed herself, holding a beer, smoking and lifting her petticoat. Scandalous! In this class, we will begin by researching and learning about the work of women photographers since photography's invention in 1839. We can imagine that some of these women have been persistent, defiant, independent and resilient. We will look to them for inspiration, yet students will use their cell phone cameras to create their own photographs. Some photography strategies may include constructing staged self-portraits or photographing still lifes in the kitchen- thereby reframing domestic spaces. Through slide lectures, biopic film screenings, class discussions and critiques, students will consider what it means to photograph with a "gendered" lens. No photography experience necessary.
